4. Present Simple tense + Negative answers

Introducing today's grammar

Do you go out on weekends? No, I don’t, I usually cook and read.

Does she work in a school? No, she doesn’t work in a school.

In this lesson, you will learn how to ask other people about regular activities or facts and to give negative answers to such questions, using the Present Simple tense.

Yes/no questions

To make the yes/no questions using the Simple Present Tense you put the auxiliary verb ‘do’ at the beginning of the affirmative sentence. For example, to make the question for the following sentence “I go to school” you add ‘do’ to the beginning – “Do I go to school?”

  • I see you. → Do I see you?
  • You eat in the restaurant. → Do eat in the restaurant?
  • We sleep late. → Do we sleep late?
  • They speak English. → Do they speak English?

To answer affirmatively to such questions you say "Yes, I / you / we / they do."

The third person singular has a different form of the question. Instead of the verb ‘do’ you use “does” and then the rest of the affirmative sentence where the main verb loses the “s” at the end. The same goes for negative sentences. For example:

  • Does he speak English? No, he doesn’t speak English.
  • Does she read books? No, she doesn’t read books.
  • Does it end? No, it doesn’t end.
